Episode 5: Curing SIBO with Adrenal Fatigue and Whether to Eliminate Nightshades

September 11, 2014 Laura 7 Comments

Thanks for joining us for our fifth episode of The Ancestral RD podcast! If you want to keep up with our podcasts, subscribe in iTunes and never miss an episode!

We talked about treating SIBO last week, and this week Kelsey addresses some common issues that come up when trying to treat SIBO and another condition like Adrenal Fatigue at the same time. Laura will be discussing nightshades and how to determine if they’re worth eliminating in your diet.

Remember, if you’d like to submit a question for our new podcast, or suggest a guest that we should host, CLICK HERE.

Here’s what Laura and Kelsey will be discussing in this episode:

  1. I have SIBO, adrenal fatigue and a bunch of other issues. I’m eating low FODMAP. Apparently with SIBO it’s important to avoid starchy vegetables and fruit. But with adrenal fatigue, I end up in trouble if I don’t have enough carbs each day. Adding to the confusion, I’ve seen articles that encourage people to increase their intake of starchy vegetables if suffering from constipation (which is my main symptom of SIBO). I really have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing. Should I EAT or AVOID starchy vegetables and fruit? And if I’m avoiding, then what on earth do I eat for carbohydrates?
  2. How will I know whether or not I need to eliminate nightshades? (28:09)

I love your approach to limit / restrict food as minimally as possible. Can I just throw out there another category of people who perhaps, though, should attempt to eliminate nightshades to see if they experience improvement?

If I eat nightshades, my diffuse joint pain is nearly unbearable. I LOLd at Laura’s eggplant parmesan suggestion because when I first went GF, I subbed roasted eggplant for the noodles. (Like, weekly!) I noticed on the nights I ate my eggplant + tomato dish, I couldn’t open my hands a few hours later.

I finally ditched them altogether and BAM! No more joint pain.

Admittedly, the nightshades are the toughest thing I have had to omit. Paprika is in EVERYTHING. But the different in my pain makes it all worth it.

So, if your listeners and readers suffer from joint pain, it may be worth a 30 elimination to see if there is an impact.

I understand the concept of getting carbs from low-FODMAP foods while treating SIBO. What I don’t understand is how you get a moderate amount of carbs from low-FODMAP foods, if the low-FODMAP foods are low carb. Per serving, most low-FODMAP foods have single-digit carb counts (according to MyFitnessPal), so if you’re trying to get a moderate carb intake of say, 100 to 150g a day, how do you do that with low-FODMAP foods, short of having to eat huge portions of them?

Foods like white rice and white potatoes are low FODMAP, as well as several varieties of fruit.

When you say “white potatoes” does that mean that red and russet potatoes are off limits?

Hi! I’ve really enjoyed listening to your podcasts. I’ve been struggling with SIBO, Candida, adrenal fatigue, and hormone imbalances for about 7 years now. I’ve worked with Naturopaths, practitioners, Gi docs, homeopaths, holistic docs, and I’m still struggling. Also been on very strict SCD diet for 3+ years, and eat very little variety. Would love to see about how to expand my diet. I’m a very determined individual and will do literally anything to get well. My question is, can I get information about working with either of you as a consultant? What are your rates? Do you conduct sessions remotely? (I’m in NYC). Would love more info. Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the podcast.
I like the way you guys approach in solving/answering the questions. Often times, the host doesn’t really answer or doesn’t answer comprehensively.

There was one thing…I would have liked to hear Kelsey speak or finish her thoughts, but Laura kept talking over her everytime K tried to speak 🙂 You both r lovely but just felt very uncomfortable to listen after a while.

Thanks Alex, we’ve since learned how to improve our conversation cadence after working on it for the past 2 years! 🙂
