Here’s what Laura and Kelsey will be discussing in this episode:
- My question is on prebiotics and soluble fiber. I often hear Acacia fiber recommended for gut health as it can feed good bacteria. But doesnt this also feed bad bacteria too? I have noticed prebiotics being sold in the store but I just dont get how it can help if its also promoting bad bacteria growth. I thought any kind of soluble fibre/prebiotic will help both the good and bad. And if we have Bad bacteria overgrowth, don’t we want to reduce it by starving them off?
- I have problems with grains, and have been doing well on the GAPS diet. However, I’m also pregnant, and most recommendations for pregnant women include several servings of grains. Should I avoid or include grains during pregnancy?

Loved the show – as always!
When I first heard the question about grains and pregnancy, I immediately assumed this was going turn into a folate/folic acid discussion. I enjoyed the carb convo and you definitely shared some important information, but still wonder, don’t you think part of the recommendation for grain consumption during pregnancy relates to the fortification of these products with folic acid and the desire to stave off neural tube defects?
Thanks.
Thanks Kristine! Actually, that’s a good point about the folic acid concerns, although many dietitians encourage their clients to eat whole grains and thus that would eliminate any folic acid fortification “benefits” since only refined grains are fortified. Plus, a prenatal vitamin is pretty much universally recommended at this point, so I’m not sure that the grains recommendations are for the folic acid specifically.
Of course, I’d rather a woman take a methylated folate, eat plenty of leafy greens, and avoid grains altogether!
The discussion on pregnancy nutrient balance blew my mind! This is very important for paleo ladies thinking about getting pregnant or just finding out they are pregnant. So far I have found fruit, potatoes, and rice to work really well – can’t take the beans… Thanks for this discussion! In reference to the comment on folate/folic acid, Grass Fed Girl had an article a little bit ago that discussed looking for natural sources of high folate content, like liver. I’d recommend checking it out.
So I was recently diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and was VERY bummed about it. I eat healthy and my weight is normal.. nowhere close to being obese so it came as a shock. I guess my carb intake was too low so with the new diet they want me to eat I have to have carb servings every few hours. This was stressful since everything the dietitian suggested was a bunch of grains or processed grain products. Listing to your podcast MADE MY DAY! Thank you so much for the grain-free carbohydrate suggestions. I’m really excited to conquer my new “pregnant” lifestyle now!
Great to hear, Stacey! We recommend checking out this book about a diet for GD: http://amzn.to/1LOlvue
